Vegetables

The veggie garden has transformed in the last few weeks. For a month or two we were eating the mustard, kale and lettuce from it. But a few weeks ago those died off and from here on out it's all about the tomatoes and pumpkins! This is a photo of the tomato plants about 3 weeks ago, they are a bit higher now and we've been picking about 3 pints a day. There is 5 different cherry/grape/pear tomatoes and one medium variety, the 'purple heart'.

Espalier

Going to try to espalier 3 trees along a very boring garage. Went to an awesome and eccentric Motz tree farm last week. I was originally going to do apple, but when I got out there, that all changed. I chose a Mesabi Cherry (sour), a Cherry (sweet), and White Lady Peach. I also got an Apricot tree 'Scout', which I was surprised to learn is a zone 3, who knew. I will be documenting this tedious task.

Permanent Vegetable Garden

Planning the vegetable garden. The fence posts are in,
one little part of the fence is done, hopefully we will
finish the rest this weekend.

cabbage
fennel
spinach leeks
kale cherry tomatoes (the only ones that work for me)
cucumbers green beans
pumpkins (the kids REALLY want to try these, I'm nervous)

We ha
ve a lot to do still, I want to finish it within the next week. Fence, tilling, then planting. Willow preschool will be helping with a little of the planting. Also, the boys will too.

The one part of the fence that is complete...

One lonely little Mayapple from the boulevard planting last year. Already blooming, more to come, I'm sure...It's only the beginning of April...

I do....

Today, two of my preschoolers were doing what they do best. Playing! They had been randomly dressing up, first with a sling for the doll, then a colorful vest, then a silk around the head. During this, one said, "hey, let's get married," the other responded "yeah." They proceeded to really go all out, silk after silk layered on, hats, necklaces. Then went into the bathroom where they held their ceremony.

One approach would be to say. "Girls, only girls and BOYS can get married." Yes, this would be old fashioned, conservative, how about UNREALISTIC. Would they get confused, since they have friends and family who are same sex, married, raising kids. Well, one would think so, in fact wouldn't it be more true to just let them play their getting married game and leave it at that. Well that's what I did and they lived happily ever after...

Whoa, that was a long time!

Just sat down to blog for the first time in 9 months! Lot's have gone on in those last 9 months.
